Parlour Souterrain

An evening of hollowing and descending

Parlour Souterrain explored the idea of under-London; the hidden world of tunnels, rivers and railways that lives beneath the city. It was a celebration of the vision, madness, and fortitude that led men to travel beneath the city hollowing out a domain encompassed by layers of rock and river.

Artists responded to the idea of the subterranean, using the unusual atmosphere of the grand entrance hall, and the motivations of Brunel himself, as a starting point for their investigation of the symbolic under-city, highlighting the motivations that cause a city to extend beneath itself in mythological terms.
